Ken

Cinema
of Ken Loach: On Binaries, Schism and Hope
Abstract
The cinema of Ken Loach is usually categorized
under labour films. Ken Loach himself emphasized several times that he
presents landscapes from the working class within the perspective of everyday
life in his movies. Nevertheless, by way of turning against Ken Loach
himself, the first aim of this article is to argue that his cinema cannot be
reduced to the category of labour film. His cinema achieves its originality
not only by focusing on the despair and conditions of the working class
members, struggling against power and capital, but also by revealing the
stories of sex workers, lumpen, blacks, drug addicts, criminals, and
different ethnical identities, namely, the alterities of every sort. This
revelation will be analysed through the term of explicitness. The second aim
of this article is to relate these alterities with hope through binaries and
pluralities and discuss the loss of hope through the schisms caused by power.
The distinctive character of Loach’s cinema is not only its adoption of the
“we” position instead of the “I” and by compos-ing the base of hope around
the pluralities which stem from the binaries, but also it takes our attention
to political moves which divide the binaries and weaken hope.
Keywords: Power,
binary, plurality, schism, hope.
